Poll shows public see climate change as a threat to human survival

The British public thinks climate change risks human extinction

A new poll has shown that most people in the UK see climate change as a threat to human survival.

Around 54% of Brits polled by ComRes agreed that “climate change threatens our extinction as a species”. Just 25% disagreed.

The Extinction Rebellion movement has been making the case that climate change threatens human survival.

Their tactics have included blocking roads and public transport in London and taking direct action against organisations it accuses of fuelling climate change.

Around 26% of those polled said they agreed with both the aims and the tactics of Extinction Rebellion while 32% said they did not.

As the UK’s adult population is around 44m, this suggests about 11m people support Extinction Rebellion despite its controversial tactics – with a far greater number sharing the movement’s concern over climate change.

One of Extinction Rebellion’s demands is that the government declares a climate emergency.

Today, parliament will debate whether or not to declare to do so after Labour called a vote on the issue.

The Liberal Democrats, Greens, Scottish National Party and Plaid Cymru are expected to vote with the Labour Party to declare a climate emergency.

    I don’t consider 54% as most.
I totally agree that something needs to be done urgently to limit our damage to the planet.

Do you know anything? Do you know that CO2 constitutes 0.04% of the Atmosphere thats 40mm equivalent at the top.Nothing man does or could do has any influence what so ever on our Climate ZERO.
Its the SUN stupid . Termites create 10 times as much CO2 as all human activity, are you going to kill them all needlessly? What do they teach at Skool these days? Oh if you want to know what does affect the Climate how about the obvious one the SUN, THAT BIG HOT SHINY ORANGE THING IN THE SKY ON A HOT DAY.

“WeatherAction is involved in the Global Warming/Climate Change debate
where we point out that the world is now cooling not warming and there is no observational evidence in the thousands and millions of years of data that changes in CO2 have any observable effect on weather or climate in the real world.
There are no scientists in the world who can produce such observational data and we challenge anyone reading this to send us such observational evidence from the real world or find someone who can and get them to produce it. There is only effect the other way, namely that ocean temperatures control average CO2 levels due to basic laws of physics about the soluability of CO2 gas in (sea) water.

This unholy alliance of UK population explosion – between Tory for profit, and Labour for votes – is wiping out whole swathes of wildlife in the UK today.

Trees are being hacked down and meadows torn up to accommodate concrete and tarmac: and we are concerned about a life-giving trace gas.

Sustainability? We are destroying this planet for power and greed: you keep fiddling for your globalist masters whilst this beautiful planet is really scarred beyond survival.

I urge people to read Tony Trent’s piece because this is what pseudoscience looks like. It is developing into a cult but one where you have to ask what is driving it all and whether Trent is a Russian algorithm written to protect their oil interests and flatter Putin’s world view!

Above all there must be a national plan to advance solutions in many ways and levels which would embrace the concerns in this article. The Tory government has gone backwards in so many ways. There many changes that can be made in the short term. Reinstate the FIT for solar panels on residential roofs, use the fuel escalator but balance with reducing taxes (e.g. VAT), encourage on-shore wind farms, reverse cuts to bus services, abandon the Heathrow third runway, abandon HS2 and divert funds to improve rail throughout the country (e.g. full electrification of Midland Mainline etc), pedestrianise major parts of city centres, scrappage schemes for old cars and CH boilers, increase the subsidies for electric cars, fund councils to install charging points, have a national programme for retro insulation of older houses, and so on but all achievable in the next five years.
