Strike wins pay rise for South London college staff

The amount of strike pay deducted has also been reduced

Workers at two South London colleges have won a pay rise after four days of strikes.

Full-time staff at the Leiwsham and Southwark colleges will receive a pay rise of £350. This will be pro-rata for part-time staff.

Staff, represented by the University and College Union (UCU), have also won changes to the way strike pay is deducted by the employer NCG.

Instead of 1/260th of a member’s annual salary, they will now take 1/36th and repay the difference on previous deductions.

NCG have also said they will review incremental pay progression. Currently, employees at NCG’s colleges in Kidderminster, Carlisle and Lancashire receive the incremental pay progression but those in London and Newcastle do not.

UCU regional official Iain Owens said:

“UCU members at Lewisham and Southwark colleges have accepted the new package on offer and we now want to work with NCG to get them onto the pay progression system enjoyed by NCG employees elsewhere in the country.”

Chris Payne, interim chief executive of NCG, said: ‘We’re pleased to have found a solution to this issue and we’re committed to further developing the long term relationship with our trade union partners.’
