PM warns her ministers to stay away from customs union vote

With her Brexit strategy falling apart, Theresa May has reportedly whipped her cabinet to stay well clear of a backbencher debate being held later this week.

Prime Minister Theresa May is not taking any chances, allegedly ordering her ministers not to show up at a backbencher vote on Britain trade bloc membership later this week.

According to sources of The Sun newspaper, the PM is feeling a little jittery about all the recent attacks on her Brexit Bill.

An unnamed source close to May told the paper:

“She is in a trap. She needs the space to get one of her proposals agreed with the EU. But clearly they won’t do that as long as they think Parliament will vote for a customs union.”

May’s rather draconian move follows a series of reports of Tory Cabinet members preparing to rebel against their leader, if the PM were to backdown on leaving the customs union.

It seems that while Thursday’s amendment discussion is mostly symbolic, May is not about to gamble her already fragile popularity.

Spokespeople for the Premier branded the claim that May would be turning Thursday’s debate into a vote of no confidence, an “absolutely mystery.”
