How might the Scots feel about independence if they had to pay off – say – 40 per cent of the UK’s total debt before gaining independence?
How might they feel about independence if the UK retained control over all the waters around Great Britain, with the Royal Navy having the sole powers to police all fishing and energy extraction?
Unless and until the precise terms of separation are known, most of the debate around independence is largely vacuous.
Why not hold the referendum at the same time as the local elections in Scotland, i.e. on Thursday, 4th May 2017? Would this not focus minds as to what separation really means?
The UK will still remain a member-state of the EU until such time as it formally and irrevocably leaves.
Does this not mean that the UK would retain a veto on Scottish membership of the EU?
If Sturgeon wants to play hard ball, I am sure Mrs May can play that game too just as well.
And none of this takes into account how EU countries like Spain would react to the separation…..

I would be happy to help in the building of a strong, high wall around it!
