I agree with Robert Jones that no serious commentator would attribute the cause of Islamic terrorism world wide to the invasions of Iraq and the ongoing situation in Afghanistan. Most Islamic countries are inherently unstable and have spent most of their existence under some form of dictatorship or other. There is an argument, with hindsight, for benevolent dictatorships but the left in general want some form of democracy even if that means all manner of forces being unleashed which were previously kept in check. Egypt being the classic case.

I don’t for a moment suppose that either the invasion of Iraq by the USA, or Tony Blair personally, were uniquely, solely responsible for the rise of Islamic militancy, but then I don’t know of any serious commentator who actually suggests that’s the case. Of course terrorism has agency of its own, and will exploit whatever lies to be exploited. I find this article a touch disingenuous.

Nah the religious fascists have been around since Islam was invented to keep the masses under control. The islamists have now lost control and their bloodlust is beyond the imagination. Of course not darling! Because it was all going so well until the Snowden revelations. Yes – that frightful Snowden man is to blame really. Not really got the X factor has he? Not like our Blair. And even if the invasion was…well partly to blame – it was the reactions to it that were the real problem. I mean, how on earth could a politician have foreseen that an act of invasion would be used to manipulate hearts and minds? Oh and I’ve never believed that ‘injustice breeds more injustice’.
