We’re hiring a staff writer

 

Recognised as one of the UK’s most influential political websites, Left Foot Forward is taking on a staff writer to work across every aspect of our editorial process.

Reporting to the editor at our central London office, the committed and enthusiastic successful applicant will join us at an incredibly exciting time, not only in the current political cycle but for the site as we look to consolidate our readership to a regular quarter of a million readers per month.

Key aspects of the role include:

  • Writing topical, evidence-based articles based on events in the current news cycle
  • Commissioning and sub-editing work from our network of contributors in politics, public policy and campaigns
  • Using spreadsheets and other software to relate data as easily understandable charts and infographics
  • Monitoring traditional and new media sources
  • Engaging with readers through social media channels and our daily email
  • Working under own initiative, including covering for the editor when required

Essential skills and characteristics include:

  • Excellent writing skills, including the ability to write and edit copy under pressure
  • A good working knowledge of British politics and current affairs
  • Proven writing experience, either in the media, or in a political/policy setting
  • Commitment to the pluralist and progressive values of Left Foot Forward
  • An intuitive understanding of what will attract readers and set the political agenda

The following could be advantageous:

  • A journalism qualification and/or previous experience of online journalism
  • Previous experience of data presentation/journalism, especially to enrich online content
  • An understanding the progressive/left-wing blogosphere
  • Experience of working with statistics or quantitative/qualitative research methods
  • Previous experience of campaigning, especially online
