I would question whether we are a democracy. A first past the post system which excludes the views of millions being represented and resulting in a governing party assuming power with a minority of the votes. An unelected House of Lords chosen by patronage and a Head of State unelected but there because of birth. Do you call this democracy?

The article states that the electoral reform society has an “obvious desire for a proportional voting system”. No. Its obvious desire – and main object according to its constitution – is Single Transferable Vote. Although this voting system happens to be proportional, it is also much more. Unlike other pr systems, it does not increase party power but increases voter power.

with welfare and notably HB recent cuts and higher private rates and the requisite neo-liberal and tory social itinerant work mobility – this will affect more people -particularly the young. Given the tories know this its cynically an exercise in gerrymandering and copying the practice of republican Jeb Bush in Florida during his brother’s election, etc.

If people do not bother to get registered, then they have to put up with the government that people who bother elect.
George Galloway on LBC said that the Labour Party ought to relabel itself: Labour – the Party of Working people. He went on to say that this meant that it was not the party of people who did not work. Food for thought.

its the responsibility of the individual to register. People must take their democratic responsibilities more seriously.

It is not the State’s responsibility to act as nanny to people who are perfectly capable to register themselves.

Hi Mark, a very articulate response that I can`t match, But is the report suggesting that MPs are or will be overstretched? So they should not take on any work such as directorships ect. I don`t know how cabinet ministers manage the time now.
