Besides the influence of the bad boys at the mosque and Jihadist groups, I think Javeed and others like him, joinned a war which has nothing to do him for other reasons.

1st) Javeed feels disenfranchised: He realizes that after all the years of schooling he’s had that his meager teacher’s salary isn’t going to afford him a comfortable middle-class lifestyle. He cannot easily own his own home, educate his children, take a nice vacation 2x a year, get a decent car, clothing, etc.
2d) He has to put up with the ever present institutionalized and blatant rascism in Britain.
3d) There’s the British class divide — which will keep him locked out of society.
4th) He feels powerless to change the course of his life.

In otherwords, what has Javeed got to lose by going to Syria to fight the “good” fight for justice for muslims? If he loses his life he’ll go to paradise, so that’s covered. His children… well dad was a martyr.. they be proud and eventually get their reward in heaven too.

Then there’s the possibility that somehow someway ISIS will win … become powerful… Javeed could become one of their shiney stars .. get medels, accolades, a place in the new government — he’ll be looked up to and admired. Which is a lot more than he’ll ever get teaching kids math, languages, etc.

It’s difficult for me to agree to ban groups that advocate hate — even muslim Jihadists. This is because you cannot shut down the hate in people’s hearts. They will still hate and act out accordinly. Then, I’d rather they not hide in the dark plotting ugly strategies — and banning them will simply push them underground. However, we don’t have to give them tax breaks or funds to support their hateful activities.

As long as people are disenfranchised by systems designed to keep them that way we will continue to see Nazi groups, Jihadists, ISIS knockoffs, etc. The more people have to lose — the less likely they are to pick up and support these groups. The question is always… what’s in it for me. What’s in it for the Javeed’s who join ISIS is the sense that they can actively end their disenfranchisement from society. We’ve got to actively end actions that shift wealth and power to a few and leave all the rest of us feeling helpless and hopeless.
