In Europe there is so much more protection for renters that most people will rent there whole lives. I moved out of London to France for this very reason. London will one day be a giant casino with no-one actually living in it. Then Boris might realise he’s destroying the very thing that makes London interesting. Twat.

Good article. Johnson defended his Mt Pleasant planning decision on such limited social/affordable housing quota on the basis that the benefit cap would allow claimants to be able to pay such planned high rents. A sleight of hand- most poor on benefits are in work, and trapped by London’s unregulated housing market. There are levels of low-pay through which most working people will increasingly not qualify for Mayor Johnson’s token “entitlements”.

Destroying Earl’s Court will mean the loss of critical exhibition space against the advice of industry bodies that better understand the situation than myopic suggestible K&C mandarins. The removal of an iconic space that generates billions for the London/ UK economy and involves engaging a huge support staff is a national disgrace . London will also lose a unique working events / concert / sports facility – none of which is to be replaced elsewhere. Earl’s Court attracts visitors from all around the world. Does K&C seriously imagine people will fly from Europe to visit a designer ghetto and its clone high street full of shops that are all replicated elsewhere? Local existing businesses and upgraded hotels have been specifically developed around Earl’s Court’s current activity. Many will now fail taking countless jobs with them and robbing this unique cosmopolitan London area of the centre that defines it. . With its lack of NEW social housing and high spec apartments, this development merely benefits rich Londoners and buy-to-leave overseas speculators and highlights the get-rich-quick casino culture that London has sadly become. In more business-savvy European cities, the already hugely successful Earl’s Court would be upgraded, heavily marketed and turned into an even bigger business centre of excellence and national asset than it already is.
