This is something that people are slowly learning (mainly the older generations) and the best way this can be shown is cause and effect, the media needs to show long term proposals of policy that all political parties have. Political parties need to show what affect their policies and proposals have over 5, 10, 20, and 40 years not just the next few.

There is a great example now where a council proposes to build an incinerator everyone is up in arms about the high capital cost but no one has asked how much more or less will the alternatives be over 40 years. On this point the discussion goes mute and suddenly all those againist the policy suddenly go quiet and express no opinion.
