The teaching unions airily brush aside claims of decline in British education standard and explains that the decline of the UK ranking in the PISA study was due to the inclusion of new countries. This is a lie.
Take Math as an example. The UK dropped from 4th place in 2000 to 28th in 2009. There are 10 countries not included in the 2000 study which performed better than the UK in the 2009 study. The remaining difference is due to the UK falling behind countries which we previously outperformed. These countries include – Liechtenstein (2000 ranking – 25), Switzerland (19), Canada (5), New Zealand (6), Belgium (18), Australia (7), Germany (21), Iceland (21), Denmark (23), Norway (13), France (12), Austria (8), Poland (22), Sweden (10) and the Czech Republic (11)
Other areas of the PISA study show the same trend – that the UK is falling behind its competitors
It is astonishing that the teaching union is showing no sense of urgency and rejected every single change.
