Mitt Romney’s trip to the UK has gone from bad to worse as it was revealed today that he described Britain as ‘just a small island’ that ‘doesn’t make things that people in the rest of the world want to buy’.

The revelation makes a mockery of the racially motivated comments of a Romney advisor who claimed earlier this week that President Obama did not ‘fully appreciate’ the special relationship because he isn’t of ‘Anglo Saxon heritage’.

Mitt-Romney-Downing-Street
Romney’s trip to the UK has been blighted by a series of gaffes. A Parliamentary motions last week criticissed the role of Barclays executives in organising a $75,000 per head fundraising dinner, concerns were raised about the racial overtones of comments about Obama’s attitude towards the UK, and the presidential candidate today flip-flopped over the Olympics after previously questioning London’s preparedness.

But Foreign Policy have now revealed that in his 2010 book, No Apology, Romney wrote:

“England [sic] is just a small island. Its roads and houses are small. With few exceptions, it doesn’t make things that people in the rest of the world want to buy. And if it hadn’t been separated from the continent by water, it almost certainly would have been lost to Hitler’s ambitions. Yet only two lifetimes ago, Britain ruled the largest and wealthiest empire in the history of humankind. Britain controlled a quarter of the earth’s land and a quarter of the earth’s population.”

Is this series of gaffes the reason why tickets for tonights drinks reception have been slashed to just $1,000 per person?

I’m pretty much fine with Mitt making a tit of himself anywhere.

What were the Reps thinking of?

David Cameron’s new best friend is turning out to be a bit of a turd in the punch bowl.

I hope we all remember Romney and if he wins the US Presidency that he doesnt expect the UK to things we dont want to do. I just hope this dangerous man doesnt get into the White House.

    Let him keep talking…..

I’m no fan of Mitt Romney – in any way shape or form – and that quote suggests a fair bit of ignorance. That said, it reeks of being taken out of context. Looks like he was trying to make some point about – what? – small countries punching above their weight? Can you clarify?

  6. Nigel Baldwin

Well, Mr Romney, for all its many faults I’d 1,000 times rather live on my little island than anywhere in the increasingly fascist minded parts of the US. And as for this “special relationship”, it’s time to say: “It’s over between us”, and for my country to stop pretending to be something it no longer is.

  7. Heather

That is so shockingly ignorant! The Brits sacrificed everything, including most of London, fighting off Hitler until the US got around to joining the war. People compare him to aristocracy. You can see why. He just thinks he’s better than everyone, and he doesn’t understand why we don’t agree. I think he’s a cold, rich fish in a boring suit and I cannot wait for this election to end so I can (hopefully) never hear from him again.

  8. Anonymous

To be honest though, he’s partly right. Thanks to successive governments’ disregard of manufacturing, these days Britain makes very little that the rest of the world wants to buy.

Not that I expect Mitt Romney would understand the value of an interventionist industrial policy, though…

I’m desperately trying to think of the last time I used something that said ‘made in america’ on it. I can’t think of a single thing.

I’m not sure any of you guys noticed this particular gaffe yet. Romney appears to suggest that he’s critical of Cameron’s austerity program: http://www.americablog.com/2012/07/romney-suggests-hes-critical-of-uk.html

You can’t be serious. This is a joke, right? He didn’t really say that. Facepalm.

W have visited Great Britain twice, which imho is not often enough, and loved every minute. The hospitality and kindness of the British people is second to none. The conversations we had in pubs, the beauty, the history all combined to make us love that sceptered isle. London is a great vibrant metropolis and has been for centuries Pay no attention to Myth Romney: he’s a complete tosser and not worth the money he spends on hair dye.

  14. Barney Thomson

Intrigued that he referred only to “England”.

Perhaps he likes to buy copious quantities of Scottish Whisky, the overconsumption of which which unfortunately leads him to spout bullshit.

[Whisky is a delight in moderation but Romney does not know the meaning of that word]

  15. Lionelair

none of the posts so far mention that he said England. Proves to me most Engurlish people have no issue with conflating Ingurland and Britain. Well the other nations of this so called union do. smarten up you badly educated morons, or your last colonies will be gone. (this kind of takes the Great out of Britain) Not that many English will care. Get by if you wish without the Scottish oil and the millions of litres of welsh water supplying Manchester, liverpool and Birmingnam

We may not make things that Mittens wants to buy but we sure make good soldiers who know in which direction the enemy is situated and ask the necessary questions first.

Not a question of whether he is right but a question of when, where and who says it. Who does he think he is? Whatever he is or becomes shall we please not invite him here again.

You have to understand there are arrogant republican buggers like Willard (the rat) Mitt Romney and then there are intelligent people who are kind and compassionate. The republicans are trying to make sure only the arrogant hateful republican buggers are the ones that get to vote and are actively working to disenfranchise anyone they deem undesirable (democrats and anyone that doesn’t agree with them 100%) in their quest to transfer America’s collective wealth to their backpockets and their republican friends. Most of America doesn’t like Willar the rat either, but half of the country will hold their nose and vote for him because they hate even more that a black man is the President in the White House instead of being the help.

Mittens doesn’t drink liquor. His Mormon cult forbids it. Reason enough run his ass off to home. In a few weeks, he’ll go back to relative obscurity (I hope). Oh, and did I say I’m sorry? I beg your pardon that this ridiculous child got out of his playpen, crossed the pond, and tried to bother the grownups. Really, I feel like copying this apology and pasting it to every post I see here. I’m that ashamed. Please, just know that there are many good and relatively sane people here in the USA who are powerless over his behavior until November (then we’ll set him straight!). The guy is such a douche, am I right??? Sheesh! So much money wasted on THAT shat-for-brains…

If it hadn’t been separated from the continent by water all the history of Britain and all its policy over the centuries would have been completely different. Romney shows that he is not only tactless but also an ignorant.

Too bad for the republicans who have no other candidate.
