Thank you for a perceptive comment on the sad death of young PSNI recruit Ronan Kerr. The reaction of the GAA and the nationalist community generally in County Tyrone shows that the majority in that community support the opportunity provided by the Good Friday/Belfast Agreement to build genuinely equal and inclusive institutions in Northern Ireland. The dissident groups have no political strategy to improve the position of those whom they claim to represent.

On the other hand youare right to point to the danger still posed if people in duisadvantaged areas see no improvement in their position and sense lack of commitment on the part of the UK and Irish governments to continuing work to deliver on all aspects of the Agreement, especialy in the area of human rights and equality. Much has been achieved as a result of the Agreement but more work is needed to ensure that the clock cannot be turned back in Northern Ireland so that there will be no more tragic deaths like that of Ronan Kerr.

Kevin, I think the timing of these events on Saturday made them particularly tragic, coming as they did on the back of, as you say, the first full term of the Northern Ireland Assembly.

But I think the comments of Sinn Fein are a sign of commitment to the peace process, and the clearest possible message should go out that I’m sure the people of Northern Ireland, and me certainly as an outsider, do not want to go back to the days of the troubles.
