However, as usual, I think there are several contenders for both.

• For the progressives, enter the European governments, including the British government who, in the face of criticism from the airlines ETC coped with the volcanic ash situation as well as I think could be expected of them. As 1 commenter on the Guardian website correctly said, as soon as you have airlines dictating aviation safety policy aviation becomes less safe. And some have criticized the deployment of the Royal Navy to rescue people, but I think it certainly has made a contribution.

• On the same theme, a possible contender for regressive of the week could be some of those airlines, particularly Ryanair, who initially refused to reimburse passengers for extra accommodation expenses:

Thankfully, after a bit of a backlash they changed their mind, though still had a go at the in my view completely justified and necessary European regulations.
