Albert Owen is dead in the water. I know people who are member’s of Ynys Mon’s CLP who are voting Plaid. They quite simply have had enough. They have a masive shortage of social housing for rent – astronomic in relation to their population size, and huge unemployment – 25% in Holyhead area alone – with more unemployment n the cards. The people want a Parliament equal to Scotland’s and see Westminster Labour as the obstacle to that. Arfon next door will also be Plaid and most of the North Wales coast will be tory.

It’s a shame really because Albert is actually quite a good MP and a very affable bloke but he carries the stigma of Blair and Brown and the disappointment of the people who want more power for the Assembly.

Was it not the case however that only 50.3% of those who voted actually supported devolution in the vote in 1997, based on a turnout of just 50.1%. If Wales is to get the same, extensive powers as Scotland, does that not need to be much greater public support for such a significant constitutional change?

Albert Owen’s comment is from a man feeling the Plaid heat in Ynys Mon.

Put simply, independence is always there, never goes away. But in such a economic quandry, to me any party leading with constitutional issues is a non starter.

The fact is that Wales is light years away from having Scottish style powers. A situation that the Labour Government thinks is fair, that Scotland is somehow more able to have its own powers.

2010 will see Plaid gains, 2011 will see the fruits of this campaign fully bloom.

I’m an Englishman residing in South Wales and whilst the Tories took the popular vote in Wales for the first time since the 1800’s in the Europeans, I think that the influence of Plaid Cymru will be underestimated by Labour at it’s peril.

I for one will vote Plaid just to give Labour a whacking for thirteen years of broken promises – not because I support Plaid and I think the SNP will do well North of the border for exactly this reason…
