Poll shows public anger at Westminster and desire for democratic reform

Proporational representation and a democratic House of Lords were popular

A Comres poll for the Daily Express has showed that the public is angry at MPs’ handling of Brexit and wants reform of Westminster.

Of the 2,000 polled on Monday and Tuesday, just 6% said Parliament is emerging from the Brexit process in a good light and 75% said today’s politicians are not up for the job.

Desire for change was firmly expressed with 72% saying the British political system needs a complete overhaul.

The pollsters asked peoples’ opinions on different constitutional reforms.

Around 52% supported “replacing the First Past the Post system for electing MPs to Westminster with a more proportional voting system”. Just 16% opposed this.

Around 45% supported replacing the House of Lords with an elected senate with just 19% opposed.

Around 67% wanted to scrap the honours system, “replacing it with a system to recognise people who make an impact on the lives of others”. Just 10% were opposed to this.

Referendums remain popular though. Around 43% supported “having more decisions made via national referendums but, unlike the EU Referendum, [making] them legally binding”. 27% were opposed.

However, the poll also showed that 48% think there should be no second referendum if the possibility of remaining in the EU is on the ballot paper. On the other hand, 35% supported a second referendum.

The poll also showed that Labour have a 2% lead over the Conservatives and Remain has a 53% to 47% lead over Leave.
